Abstract
This paper is an attempt to rewrite the syllable-based Old
English (OE) stress rules in Yamada (1995a) in metrical phonology into
a form of the UNIX's Korn Shell programming. It is shown that an
apparent complexity of the relations between the rules in OE stress
assignment can be resolved into a relatively simple form. With the
help of these relations clarified here, we will be able to draw a new
map concerning the mechanism of the OE phonology.

0 Introduction
This paper examines interrelations between parameterized rules,
constraints, and principles of Old English (OE) stress assignment in
metrical phonology. The rudimentary idea has implicitly been
suggested in Yamada (1995a), and thus needs to be developed into a
systematized theoretical framework. Although in this paper
discussions are confined to Old English data, it will not be implied
that the interrelationships developed here between parameterized
stress rules, constraints, and so forth, are particular to OE; rather,
some belong to OE Grammar, while others to Universal Grammar. Thus,
naturally, the theory developed here can be employed in the analysis
of stress in other languages.

3 Conclusion
In this paper, we have seen that almost all the relations between
the Old English stress rules in metrical phonology can be rewritten
and made clear with the help of the notations used for the UNIX's Korn
Shell programming. The remaining problem with this analysis is the
treatment of the so-called "constraint" type of restriction on the
system of rules, which will be one of the major topics in Yamada
(1995b).
