Problems with Stress Checking by
Well-Formedness Conditions

Abstract
Problems with two types of analysis of stress distribution of
words in English are discussed: stress assignment by rule and stress
checking by well-formedness conditions. The former is mainly based on
Hayes (1980) and Halle and Vergnaud (1987), the latter on Burzio
(1994). The main problem with the rule-based analysis is "lexical
specification" treatment of some words, while the problem with
Burzio's stress checking analysis is its ad hoc postulation of
subclass feet as being included in the proposed general foot
inventory.
