On Secondary Stress Treatment in English:
                           A Widget-Based Approach

                                   Abstract

It is pointed out in Yamada (1998a) that neither the purely
rule-based analysis in Halle and Vergnaud (1987) nor the
stress checking analysis in Burzio (1994) completely accounts
for the secondary stress distribution of English words.
This paper proposes a third method of analysis by intro-
ducing the new concept of "widgets." Widgets are defined as
being basic building parts of phonological rules. Moreover,
widgets are ranked with each other. In other words, rules are
composed of ranked widgets. Combination of widgets thus de-
termines the major function of a given rule. Both the Secondary
Stress Rule and Stress Deletion Rule, for example, are ordered
with each other, and widgets constructing the rules are ranked.

Keywords: order, rank, rule, stress, widget
